R. H. Singleton

JWK

J. W. Kelly immigrated to the United States in February 1863. In 1864, he decided to move to Nashville, TN - where he eventually joined in on the booming liquor business. When he was named one of 100 Men Who Have Done Much for Chattanooga in December 1892, the accompanying article about Kelly states this:

“In February, 1863, at the age of 19, he emigrated to New York, and a year later removed to Nashville. There he became associated with R. H. Singleton in the book and stationery business, assisting him in compiling the first directory ever published in Nashville.” — Chattanooga TImes December 8, 1892.

During our research, we were able to locate a few items about Singleton to add to our archives. These items were published during 1865-1866, which we approximate is the time that Kelly still worked for him. He left Nashville in September 1866 to come to Chattanooga.
