
1893 World's Fair
We love being able to tie the Kelly’s to world history events. Here’s a new one: The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. This particular fair is notorious for a number of reasons, but still it’s pretty amazing to be able to link Mr. & Mrs. Kelly to it. . .

The World’s Columbian Exposition (which was the official name for the 1893 World’s Fair, aka the Chicago World’s Fair) was a world’s fair held in Chicago to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the New World in 1492. It opened May 1 and ran until October 30.
It was also significant because it debuted some of the world’s most revolutionary inventions: widespread use of electricity, the original ferris wheel, the first moving walkway, Juicy Fruit Gum, Cream of Wheat, Cracker Jacks, Shredded Wheat Cereal, Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer, the first performance of the Pledge of Allegiance, the brownie, Vienna Sausage, the first fully electrical kitchen and Ottomar Anschutz’s electrotachyscope, which used a Geissler tube to project the illusion of moving images. Budweiser also had the exclusive contract to serve their beer at the Exposition. And as their exclusive distributor for the Chattanooga area, of course J.W. Kelly was proud to laud this fact in the newspaper.
